Fungal Skin Infections

Fungal skin infections can be unpleasant, but with the right treatment they usually clear up fairly easily. Sadly, some of us are prone to get them again and again, without really knowing why.

Doctors say that some people are just more likely to get fungal skin infections, like some people are more likely to pick up a nasty cold, or be susceptible to allergies. In fact, the tendency for adults to get recurring fungal skin infections on the feet and toenails is actually genetically programmed. That's because the skin cannot get rid of it easily because it doesn't recognise the invading fungus as something foreign.

The good news is that there are things you can do to prevent a recurrence of fungal skin infections, and help keep those incidents at bay. While there is no guarantee that you'll never get a fungal skin infection again, you can reduce the likelihood of this happening by taking the right precautions...

Types of Fungal Skin Infections:

Affecting the skin, hair and nails, fungal skin infections will result in scaly patches of skin or flaky, yellowed nails. They are caused by fungi that are attracted to moist warm environments, and often are confused with other skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis.

There are several types of fungal skin conditions, know medically as "tinea". Some types of tineas run in families. Here are the most common types:

  • Tinea Paedia (athlete's foot): Affecting only humans, this infection rarely is seen amongst children. It occurs as the foot is a warm, often sweaty area in which fungus love to thrive. Wearing sweaty socks and plastic shoes that do not allow your feet to breathe will contribute to this condition.
  • Tinea Unguiuim (nail fungus): Hard to get rid of, this usually affects the toenails and is common amongst people who also have athlete's foot. The nail eventually will turn yellow and break off. Rarely are fingernails affected.
  • Tinea Cruis (jock itch): More common in men than women, this gets its name from athletes who often have sweaty groin areas, where fungi are likely to congregate. More common among men who also have athlete's foot, it produces a red border in the groin area that is itchy and unpleasant.
  • Tinea Corporis (ringworm): Not really a worm at all, this infection can be anywhere on the skin, forming a ring. It can be spread through human-to-human contact and you can also catch it from an infected dog or cat.
  • Tinea Capitis (scalp ringworm): This can result in patches of hair loss which will eventually grow back, although with a kerion, or inflammatory scalp tinea, you may need special medications to prevent permanent hair loss.

Preventing Recurrence of Infections

As mentioned, fungi thrive in hot, moist environments, which is another reason they spread so quickly and easily from one person to another. Sharing combs, towels and flip flops is one way to spread a fungal infection.

Luckily, there are ways to get rid of fungal skin infections fairly easily, usually by using a special anti-fungal shampoo or cream, or taking a medication designed to eradicate the problem.

You can help stop the little critters from coming back by:
  • Having proper foot hygiene, including washing your feet daily and making sure they are completely dry before putting on footwear of any kind.
  • Wearing only breathable shoes (not plastic) and 100 per cent cotton socks.
  • Wearing flip flops (or the equivalent) in public places such as locker rooms and public showers, where the environment is moist and humid.
  • Wearing only loose-fitting cotton underpants if you are prone to jock itch or yeast infections of any kind.
  • Not lounging around in wet swimming costumes.
  • Washing all bed linen regularly to get rid of any fungal spores, and washing all linen and any clothes that have touched the head in a hot wash if anyone in your family has scalp ringworm.
Fungal skin infections are not the end of the world but they can make life miserable for a time. Know what they are and take steps to prevent those little fungi from flourishing.

3 Ways to Heal Fungal Infections in the Armpit

Armpit Fungal Infections

1. Get a Prescription Topical Ointment

While fungal infections in the armpit are rare, they can become quite severe given the right conditions. Your doctor will need to assess the extent of your condition to prescribe the most effective course of treatment action, but relatively mild fungal infections of the armpit are normally treated using a topical antifungal cream or ointment. Nystatin (Candidate for Candidiasis, Candida and Yeast Infections), tolnaftate (Tolnaftate Antifungal Powder - 45 G), imidazole and naftidine are the most commonly prescribed antifungal creams. Your treatment regimen will likely last about 3 weeks, and you'll need to apply ointment two or three times per day (or as directed). Make sure to follow the application directions closely and continue treatment as long as you're directed. Fungal infections can quickly recur, even when they appear to have cleared up, if you cease treatment too soon.

2. Use Systemic Antifungal Drugs
If your skin infection is more serious in nature or particularly widespread, you may need to take systemic drugs to cure it. These drugs are taken orally and will gradually reduce the spread of the infection on your skin. Should your skin infection include the appearance of white spots, you should be aware that these spots will probably remain on your skin even after the fungal infection has cleared. This is true of both topical and systemic antifungal drugs. Over time, the white spots will heal themselves and disappear. Permanent marks are rare.

3. Apply a Special Body Shampoo
You can prevent white spots and stop a fungal infection from getting a hold on your skin by washing daily with antifungal shampoo or fungal soap liquid (PediFix FungaSoapLiquid with Tea Tree oil, 6 oz.). Usable on both your hair and your body, antifungal shampoos are applied to affected areas and left to sit for a period of 15 to 30 minutes. They can also be used in tandem with topical or systemic medications to heal and cure infections that have already begun.

Sunless Tanning – A Brief Overview

Tanning is one of those things that you simply can’t go without nowadays if you want to look good. No matter how naturally handsome you are, or how hard you’ve been hitting the gym – darkening your skin by a few shades will always boost the effects of your appeal dramatically. A few decades ago however, scientists began to realize the dangers that the Sun’s UV rays hold for us.

You see, lying out on the beach under the bright Sun can do wonders for your looks, but it can also lead to many health complications in the long run – the most serious one being skin cancer. Also, everyone’s probably experienced the terrible effects of overestimating your tanning timing – being unable to fall asleep at night because you don’t know which side to turn to, the burning sensation even when putting on clothes – these can easily deter anyone from Sun tanning.

There’s a safer alternative to lying under the Sun – tanning booths – but those don’t really eliminate the health risks associated with UV rays. The benefits they provide are that they’re more convenient (you don’t have to rely on the weather to get tanned), and you can monitor your time more efficiently. But if you’re afraid of skin cancer, you should avoid those as well.

What does that leave us? Sunless tanning is the cosmetic industry’s answer to those problems. It involves various procedures which can alter your skin color without exposing you to harmful UV rays.
Sunless tanning products generally work by applying chemicals to the skin, which then cause reactions that lead to color changes. There are several kinds of sunless tanning products, all of them with their own advantages and disadvantages.

DHA-based products are currently considered to be the best, as they can be very efficient and completely harmless. DHA stands for dihydroxyacetone, a chemical which interacts with the amino acids in your skin’s uppermost layer – the “horny layer”. The reaction causes color changes in the skin, a process similar to one that is commonly used in the food industry. The tan fades quickly though, lasting about 3-7 days. This is because the skin’s dead cells are continuously shed off, and they’re the ones affected by DHA’s effects.
While DHA-based products are the most effective you can buy right now, there are others which can be used to further increase the effects and make them more prominent and/or quick-acting. There are various tanning accelerators, most often sold in the form of pills and lotions, which are normally based on the acid tyrosine. Tyrosine is known to stimulate your body’s natural melanin production, which in turn boosts the tanning process.

There are other methods available too – if you need a quick fix that only lasts one day or so, you may find the perfect solution in temporary bronzers. Those products work by actually staining your skin, and therefore they last until they’re washed off. Be careful though, bronzers can leave marks on your clothes, so avoid wearing light-colored clothes after bronzing yourself.

Skin Care Tips
Wear a sunblock every day... The primary cause of premature aging is exposure to the sun without adequate care and protection. Don't wash your skin too often... Washing strips oil and moisture. Besides, tap water contains chlorine which causes oxidative damage. Washing your face twice a day is sufficient. Do not smoke... Smoking can cause the skin to age prematurely, as well as take on an unflattering sallow tone. Nicotine will reverse your anti aging routine quicker than anything else. Wear sunglasses... This will protect the eyes as well as the delicate skin around them. Take care in checking the products label and make sure they provide UVA and UVB protection. Warm water over hot... When bathing choose warm water over hot. It is not as drying and is more natural. Get ample sleep... Most of the body's repair and rejuvenation occurs while you sleep. Follow a nightly regimen... Apply products 1 hour before bedtime to allow ample time to penetrate the skin. Exercise regularly... It increases the flow of nutrients and oxygen to the skin, which will give skin a natural, healthy glow. Choose products carefully... Everyone's skin is different, so try several to see which products work best for you and which produce an anti effect. Never sleep with makeup... Sleeping with makeup is not natural for your skin. It may also have an adverse effect with your anti aging routine.
